CFD Company background

This is an example of NEOS' background and experience on cranial fixation devices (CFD).

BHID, now a discontinued product, was our first cranial fixation system. BHID was based on shape memory materials, designed to be lodged in the burr hole. It consisted of an upper and a lower platform, bound by a nitinol spring, located in the epicranial and epidural spaces respectively.

BHID implantationNitinol is a nickel-titanium alloy with the following main features:

  • Shape memory
  • Super-elasticity

BHID made use of nitinol's shape memory in order to perfectly refix to the skull the bone flap resulting from a craneotomy. After the application of warm physiological serum (or after allowing a reasonable time for the patient's body temperature to affect the implant), the stretched device returned to its original shape. As it was designed to always go back to the minimum height state, it put pressure on both the bone flap and the cranium and, as a result, the flap was immobilized.
